The travel season will soon be upon us and many Colorado businesses will be accommodating vacationers. Here are some helpful counterfeit VISA traveler's cheque tips for businesses:
- Examine the cheque. The paper should feel like currency. Counterfeits feel different.
- The watermark should be visible from the front and back side of the cheque when it is lifted to the light. Counterfeits may only have the watermark on front, but not on the back.
- The cheque should have a raised texture. Counterfeits do not have this feature.
- Look for Holographic threads. The current design contains a silver, metallic, shiny strip with the word 'secure' repeated. Counterfeits have a dull strip.
- Get the signature. Be sure to watch the customer sign each cheque.
- Check the signature. Compare the countersignature with the signature appearing in the upper right.
- If the cheque is presented already countersigned, ask the customer to sign the cheque, on the reverse, and confirm the identity with photo ID.
- In case of a Visa Dual Signature Travelers Cheque, the countersignature must match one of the two original signatures in the upper right.
- Respond accordingly. If you are suspicious of the cheque or the customer presenting it, call Visa's toll free number 1-800-227-6811 for verification. Try to retain the cheque, but if the presenter becomes abusive or threatening, return the check immediately.
