Cathy Wakeman started managing Animas Trading Company nearly 30 years ago, and has molded this fun, funky and classic bohemian store in Durango into what it is today.
“Animas Trading is the original ‘hippie store’ in Durango. It was inspired by the Grateful Dead. In the early 90s we posted the Grateful Dead tour schedule on a large chalkboard and traded tapes with our customers and community members,” said Cathy. “Our goal is to keep that vibe alive and provide a fun and friendly atmosphere for people to shop, browse and work.”
In 2007, Cathy was able to purchase Animas Trading Company. Her merchandise is often globally inspired and sourced, and it’s constantly changing. It’s the go-to place for incense, bumper stickers, window stickers, candles, jewelry, hats, sunglasses, gloves, tie-dye t-shirts and garments, posters, tapestries, hacky sacks, buttons, magnets, greeting cards and much more.
“I travel to southeast Asia to bring a distinctive collection of clothing, accessories and gifts to Durango at affordable prices,” said Cathy. “It’s great to have the opportunity to indulge my love for adventure around the world, then share it with my community.”
And not surprisingly, her community support is substantial. Animas Trading Company is a founding member of Local First, a 501(c)6 nonprofit that works with the local, independent business community in La Plata County to create an economy that values the people, the planet and prosperity for everyone. Animas Trading is also a big supporter of the Durango Bluegrass Meltdown, iAm Music and many other local and regional nonprofits.
“I started banking at Alpine Bank in 2021 and immediately felt welcome. Whenever I go to the bank I feel like I’m visiting with old friends,” said Cathy. “Everyone from the tellers to the personal bankers know my name and greet me with a smile. The customer service is excellent and whenever I have questions or need help with my account someone is always there to help or find the answers and get back to me promptly. I am very happy with my decision to switch to Alpine Bank.”
