Cultivating Community in Silt

Highwater Farm was started in 2020. Their mission is to increase access to locally grown produce and to provide valuable jobs and training in sustainable farming to young people in Garfield County.

That first year the farm grew 8,000 pounds of produce on a half-acre and routed half of their crops to local hunger relief efforts. Support for their work comes from individual donors and organizations, local businesses like Alpine Bank, and by the customers who purchase their produce.

The farm partners with neighboring environmental and community nonprofits, like UpRoot Colorado, who pick surplus crops and help increase food security in Colorado. Their gleaning coordinator, Genevieve Villamizar, is pictured harvesting here.

In 2021 Highwater Farm planted a full acre and launched its first youth program, hiring teens and college interns. HighwaterFarm.org
