Junior Achievement (JA) was founded in 1919 to prepare young people to thrive in a global economy by inspiring a passion for free enterprise and entrepreneurship and instilling an understanding of personal financial literacy.
Annually, JA USA reaches over 4.8 million students in 210,000 classrooms across 50 states. JA programs are taught by volunteers in cities, suburbs and rural areas throughout the United States. Here in Routt County, JA will serve over 2,000 students in grades K-12 during the 2017-18 school year—involving over 50 community volunteers.
Alpine Bank Loan Assistant Scott Norris in Steamboat first heard of this program when Sally Messinger, JA’s Mountain District manager discussed the program with Alpine Bank staff in 2015. He has since volunteered annually and teaches at both local elementary schools. Scott has taught 200+ students how banks work and the importance of all businesses in local communities.
JA nominated Scott in 2017 for JA’s Volunteer of the Year for his efforts, and he continues to inspire local elementary students several times a year. “I am passionate about giving back to my local community and teaching inquiring minds seems a perfect fit. I enjoy my time with the children as we share many of the same passions: alliteration, fireflies, fashion, fine foods, freebies and furry friends.”
