It was the biggest buzz in Durango on September 5 when 12 all-male teams competed in a relay race wearing high heels. It was for the inaugural Men In Heels event to raise funds and awareness of the Women’s Resource Center (WRC) that advocates, educates and empowers women and girls in La Plata County. Funds also went to support the Gena Rych Scholarship fund, in memory of the very special and unique Gena Rych.
“It was an evening filled with excitement and the all-out bravery of the men who ran a mile in our shoes and amazement of how generous our community is. We are so thankful to Beth Drum, senior vice president from Alpine Bank Durango and Paige Cadman from Hilltop in Grand Junction for their help and advice for our first-time event, ” said Kelly DiGiacomo, special events coordinator.
The Men In Heels event is one of the many ways the WRC raises money to serve the 1,500 women and girls they serve. Every year they promote their annual campaign in November and December to meet their budget, and this year they have a lofty goal of $40,000. If you would like to be a part of their organization and contribute to their goal, go to www.WRCdurango.org.
WRC Message for 2020 “We hope you’ll join the WRC as we celebrate women’s historic resistance and triumph, with the centennial of suffragists’ great political victory being commemorated nationwide throughout 2020. Be a part of the Women’s Suffrage Centennial. 2020 offers the perfect opportunity for both women and men to honor women’s hard-won progress and expand our work for universal freedom, justice and equality. The 2020 Women’s History Month (March) theme celebrates the women who have fought for women’s right to vote in the United States. In recognition of the centennial of the 19th Amendment which guaranteed women the right to vote, we will honor women from the original suffrage movement, as well as 20th and 21st century women who have continued the struggle to ensure voting rights for all throughout the month of March.”
