“Mount Sopris,” by John Toly

Originally from Rock Springs, Wyoming, artist John Toly found his way to the Colorado mountains in the late ‘60s. He soon learned to ski and began painting watercolor landscapes. He found a happy home in Vail before moving to Aspen and eventually settling in Carbondale, where he still resides. He regularly paints watercolors with a strong sense of mood, place and mystery. Harmony and balance are important in his compositions, as well as a positive feeling even if the painting depicts dark and stormy weather.

“A lot of people, including myself, often think of Mount Sopris as having many beautiful looks, moods, and a mysterious spiritual quality,” he said. “I try to capture some of this in my paintings. I feel as many do, that we are most fortunate to have this beautiful mountain in our front yard.”
