Verified By Visa® FAQ
What is Verified by Visa®?
Verified by Visa is a behind-the-scenes fraud protection tool designed to make online purchases more secure by helping ensure that the owner of the Visa card is the one making the payment.
- An extra layer of security for online transactions
- Increased confidence in the safety of online purchases
- When required, a simple, easy-to-use interface
What do I have to do to sign up?
Nothing. There is no enrollment or password required.
How does it work?
When you initiate an online purchase, Visa performs a risk-based authentication based on many variables. It determines if something about the online purchase isn't quite right.
About 95% of all transactions that come through are considered low risk (no further action required).
Less than 5% of transactions will be challenged because they're flagged as high risk. Some sort of suspicious element associated with the transaction was detected such as: the merchant is on the watch list, the transaction is a high dollar amount, etc. At this point, a pop-up will appear asking for additional information to verify you are the actual cardholder. It will look like this:
If the challenge questions are answered correctly, the cardholder will then see a "Thank You" screen. In the event the challenge questions are answered incorrectly, the cardholder will be prompted to answer the challenge questions again.
During the authentication process, if the cardholder has repeated incorrect responses to the challenge questions three times, it will cause the authentication process to be suspended. If the cardholder waits one hour, they are allowed to try the transaction again. If they enter the incorrect responses three more times (during the second attempt), the authentication process will become locked and the cardholder will not be able to perform any internet purchases until the registration is unlocked for the card. In this case, please call 800-551-6098 for assistance with Alpine Bank cards.
Less than 1% of authentication is declined from the outset and most of the time the merchant abandons the transaction. This might happen if the transaction is being performed in a country like Ghana or Nigeria in Africa, Russia, Turkey, Malaysia or China, and someone is trying to order the same item multiple times, such as laptop computers, for example.
