Colorado’s Colombians lend a neighborly hand

It’s not about prestige, or pay. The nonprofit Fundacion de Colombianos en Colorado is fueled by passion, and devoted volunteers who take their convictions and turn them into action.

The organization was established in 2016 to support programs and activities that contribute to an environment where Latino children have the opportunity to obtain an excellent education. In addition, they work closely with the Colombian community in Colorado, helping link those in need with different resources.

“Our amazing team is committed to helping others. We have no paid staff and Fundacion is run entirely by volunteers,” says board chair Xiomara Sanchez. “The desire to help others and make a difference transcends monetary motives. Not only do we give back to individuals and communities but we also work together as a team, which gives our volunteers a sense of connection that comes from working toward a shared mission.”

The work of the nonprofit is varied and versatile. It may be a winter coat drive, or support for Colombians interested in starting a business in the U.S. Young Juan Sebastián was supported through his health issues and treatment at Children’s Hospital Colorado, and was able to visit family back home in Bogotá thanks to the efforts of Fundacion de Colombianos en Colorado.

“Alpine Bank has been an essential partner to support us in reaching our fullest potential,” says Xiomara. “We’re grateful for their help in strengthening our community, and increasing both awareness and audiences for our organization.”
